 Common Sense Term Limits

To the United States Congress:

As concerned citizens and representatives of our great nation, we propose the implementation of term limits for elected officials in the United States Congress. This change is aimed at promoting a more responsive, accountable, and dynamic legislative branch that accurately reflects the diverse views and interests of the American people.

Our proposal includes the following key components:

  1. Constitutional Amendment:

    • Introduce a Constitutional amendment establishing term limits for members of the United States Congress, in accordance with Article V of the Constitution.

    • Seek broad bipartisan support for the amendment, engaging with members of Congress, state legislatures, and the general public to build consensus on this critical issue.

  2. Term Limits for Members of Congress:

    • Set term limits for Representatives and Senators as follows:

      • Representatives: Three terms (six years) in the House of Representatives

      • Senators: Two terms (12 years) in the Senate

    • Implement these term limits in a phased manner, allowing current members of Congress to serve out their current terms before the new restrictions take effect.

  3. Strengthened Accountability and Transparency:

    • Enhance transparency and accountability mechanisms within Congress, requiring members to provide clear and regular reports on their activities, votes, and legislative accomplishments.

    • Encourage the development of more effective channels for citizens to provide feedback, express concerns, and engage with their elected representatives.

  4. Support for Newly-Elected Officials:

    • Establish a comprehensive onboarding and training program for newly-elected members of Congress to ensure they are well-prepared to carry out their legislative duties.

    • Provide resources and support for incoming lawmakers to quickly develop the knowledge, skills, and relationships needed to effectively represent their constituents.

  5. Post-Service Opportunities:

    • Encourage and support former members of Congress to transition into roles that leverage their expertise and experience in public service, such as teaching, consulting, or working for non-profit organizations.

    • Recognize and celebrate the valuable contributions of those who have served their country in the United States Congress.

By implementing term limits for members of Congress, we can help restore trust in our democratic institutions, reduce the influence of special interests, and create a more dynamic, responsive, and representative legislative branch. We believe this proposal offers a path toward a stronger, more accountable Congress, and we urge you to consider its adoption as a key priority.

Sincerely,

Jay Bowman
